Fonts that save trees

One more way to cut back on the gobs of paper we waste each year is by choosing a font that will reduce the length of your word document.

A few fonts that we are familiar with and use on a daily basis are Helvetica, Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana, Geneva, Courier and Garamond, which are popular for their legibility and come installed on most every computer.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to completely abandon your favorite font — just look for a “narrow” or “condensed” version instead. Condensed fonts are designed to maintain readability and conserve space at the same time. If you can’t find one in your font library you can condense any font yourself by reducing the kerning or horizontal scale within the character settings in your word program. Search for a free font download when all else fails.

Another way to decrease the size of your document is by using a smaller point size. Most of us use the default point size of 12pt, but you can go as low as 10pt, depending on your reader and the type of font it is.
