$4.39 per gallon and rising

Let’s face it, not all of us can afford a Toyota Prius and with gas prices climbing like crazy many of us may have to start looking at more affordable ways of getting around the islands. Here are a few alternatives to consider:

The Bus-the 20th most utilized transit system in the country with a fleet of vehicles that includes 10 hybrid buses, which use 30% less fuel than conventional diesel buses. Visit http://www.thebus.org/ for rates and time schedules.

Huffy- polish up that old bicycle of yours that is collecting dust in the garage and start peddling, because outside of walking this is the most eco-friendly way to transport yourself around town.

Bio-Beetle- For visitors to the island of Maui, this eco-friendly car rental company offers VW Beetles that run on 100% biodiesel. Check out their website for more details at http://www.bio-beetle.com/maui_car_rental.htm

Car Pool World- This resource is available for those interested in carpooling. I checked it out and was surprised to see a decent amount of local people registered. To see what’s available in your area visit their site.
